Athletic Coaching, Minor


Our nationally accredited athletic coaching program provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become a successful coach. Students will learn the national standards for athletic coaching to ensure that they will provide quality training and have a positive impact on their athletes. Students will gain the fundamental knowledge, skills, and coaching experience that is essential to work with youth, interscholastic and intercollegiate athletes.

Student Learning Outcomes


  • Develop competencies to become effective instructors, communicators, and motivators. 

  • Create and develop organizational strategies including leadership, instructional planning for individual and team settings, and time management. 

  • Construct an athletic coaching philosophy and coaching objectives that will demonstrate a commitment to athletes who are diverse in maturation, cultural heritage, gender, sexual orientation, and abilities. 

  • Apply the physiological principles and applications for training athletes. 

  • Illustrate professional and ethical behavior that is reflective of athletic coaching.

Students must complete a minimum of 6 credits of advanced standing per the PennWest minor policy.
