Advance your teaching skills and enhance your knowledge of Earth’s atmosphere, ocean and climate systems. Through its unique partnership with the American Meteorological Society (AMS), PennWest-California offers K-12 teachers an opportunity to earn graduate credits tuition-free when they participate in nationally recognized AMS Education Program courses. Teachers enrolled in DataStreme courses are supported by teams of regionally based mentors. These expert educators and scientists answer questions and provide feedback, promote learning, and assist as you apply your coursework to curriculum development and hands-on lessons in your own classroom. DataStreme courses are offered online in the spring and fall semesters.
The summer courses are primarily in-person workshops, although some requirements are completed online. Project Ocean (ATMS 5015) explores the physical foundations of oceanography at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Project Atmosphere (ATMS 5014) focuses on meteorology and atmospheric science at the National Weather Service Training Center in Kansas City, MO.
More than 21,000 teachers across the United States have energized their science classes with information and techniques learned through AMS DataStreme courses and hands-on AMS summer workshop-courses. They become science leaders in their own schools and communities, educating their teaching colleagues and ultimately reaching millions of students nationwide.

Student Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of the certificate, students will be able to:
1. Assess atmospheric conditions using near real-time data to analyze weather patterns
and projections.
2. Analyze dynamic ocean data in near real-time using American Meteorological Society
(AMS) technology to replicate the decision-making processes of oceanographers in
predicting future ocean conditions.
3. Evaluate climatic patterns by interpreting relevant data graphs and charts to assess the
influences of climate on society and human/environmental/ecosystem interactions.
4. Interpret prognostic techniques to predict formation of weather systems and describe
the use and applications of numerical models in weather forecasting.
Admissions Requirements
This program is for active K-12 teachers and does not lead to initial teacher certification. AMS must validate registration and enrollment so as to match students with their appropriate mentor.
