The MS Legal Studies is designed to provide students with critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and informational literacy skills, through the general study of legal theories, ethics, reasoning and principles, all within the context of public policy. Skills acquired in this program are applicable to a wide array of careers in law, government, paralegalism, court systems, law enforcement, military, national security, business, human resources, and social work as students learn how law impacts public policy, the culture, the individual, the community, and the workplace.

Student Learning Outcomes


  • Students will demonstrate problem solving and/or critical thinking skills in accordance with the principles of legal reasoning and legal analysis.
  • Students will correctly identify the ethical considerations inherent in legal and public-policy decision-making.
  • Students will effectively write about the law and its implications from various public policy perspectives.
  • Students will comprehensively evaluate the legal resources used in addressing legal and public policy problems.
