The certificate in Professional Writing helps learners build a broad and deep skill set necessary for effective writing in a variety of contexts, and it teaches them how to design and tailor their writing to meet the needs of their intended readers. The certificate’s flexible, practical curriculum will help writers stand out amongst peers in their disciplines and in the workforce as it provides them with essential skills and opportunities in increasingly competitive arenas where thoughtful, articulate writing is in-demand. 

Student Learning Outcomes


  • Critically read, analyze, and critique “mentor” texts in various genres and fields in order to understand what makes them rhetorically successful. 
  • Make appropriate choices regarding style, structure, and mechanics in order to produce compelling, rhetorically successful prose in a variety of genre(s) that responds appropriately to audience, purpose, and context.  
  • Prepare for future personal and professional writing contexts by producing revised, polished documents that can be used in a portfolio.  

Admission Requirements


Successful completion of ENGL 1200   or equivalent OR permission of department chair.
