The minor in Deaf Studies provides students with a detailed view of persons who have hearing loss. This cluster of courses examines the development of the sense of hearing through adulthood and the ramifications of hearing loss on development, language choice, academic achievement, identity, and adult life. The minor also emphasizes a cultural view of Deafness that includes Deaf literature, history, and American Sign Language. In addition, students will gain an awareness of the various settings and fields where people who are Deaf or hard of hearing would be encountered.

Student Learning Outcomes
The student will:
- Describe speech and language development in hearing and deaf children
- Identify various methods of manual and oral communication
- Display understanding of types and severity of hearing loss
- Compare and contrast methods of amplification and aural rehabilitation techniques
- Describe the nature and structure of language through comparisons of ASL and English
- Use and comprehend American Sign Language texts in a variety of topics and settings
- Engage in social and academic conversations in American Sign Language, both expressively and receptively in a variety of settings
- Describe how knowledge of the Deaf World (visual learning, visual language, and Deaf art forms) can contribute to a better understanding of the human condition, science, and technology
- Identify the distinctive viewpoints that are illuminated by the unique modality of American Sign Language, Deaf art forms, and the distinct perspectives of the Deaf world
