The certificate in Cannabis Science and Industry at Pennsylvania Western University prepares students for exciting careers in the cannabis industry. Designed for professional seeking to work in a variety of positions within the industry, this certificate introduces students to the foundational scientific principles and organizational practices of the legal cannabis sector. Students will learn an overview of the cannabis business sector, including the industry outlay (growers, processors, labs and dispensaries), operational practices, policy and compliance requirements, and industry best practices. Students will discuss industry specific practices including licensing, retail and sales, marketing, accounting and operations, and liability. Moreover, students will gain a strong  understanding of industry challenges regarding taxation, banking and finance, real estate, workforce development, good manufacturing practices and much more. Students will also take a deep dive into cannabusiness policy and compliance specific to each sector of the industry covering topics from security, to waste disposal, to labeling products. Students who complete the program will also gain an overview of the basic agricultural and industrial practices necessary for cultivating and processing cannabis. Basic principles of cannabis anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry will lay the foundation for an exploration into growing practices including plant breeding and propagation, soil monitoring, environmental conditions, harvesting and post-harvest handling techniques, etc. Students will also be introduced to chemical analysis and extraction techniques used in processing cannabis for a variety of products. Students who complete this certificate will also gain an introduction to medical research and clinical practices, as well as modes of administration of cannabis for therapeutic use. An overview of the medical history of cannabis, the endocannabinoid system and its components, and medical applications will educate students in the fundamental human biological impacts of cannabis use. Clinical research and current medical practices will be reviewed to gain an understanding of medicinal cannabis for treating a variety of psychiatric, neurological, anti-inflammatory and other illnesses. Students will also gain an understating of the processes necessary for patients to navigate medical marijuana programs in a state specific context. This certificate allows for a deep dive into the medical and commercial cannabis sectors, and it would be a steppingstone for a variety of industry specific careers.
