The certificate in remote sensing provides students with a solid core of theoretical and lab-based remote sensing education, using state-of-the-art equipment and software.  Students gain a solid grounding in vegetation science, which helps them understand the relationships between vegetation patterns seen in imagery and the environmental drivers that mediate these patterns.  Additionally, students are offered the opportunity to enroll in electives that strengthen their geospatial skills, with specialized courses in remote sensing (e.g., RADAR), geographic information systems (GIS). A minor in Remote Sensing prepares students to work in a variety of environmental careers such as natural resource management, Geology, Forestry and environmental conservation. While online RS certification helps achieve professional goals and advancement in different careers, it offers an affordable and convenient option for those with an existing employment and busy schedules. This certificate helps fulfill some of the requirements for the ASPRS certification programs.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Recognize, state essential RS concepts, and solve spatial problems using RS Software (ENVI)
  • Identify patterns and problems that facilitate real-world problem solving through use of RS software
  • Manipulate geographic and non-geographic datasets (i.e., create, edit, and modify datasets)
  • Demonstrate familiarity with the concepts and applications of geographic analysis
  • List the major sources of remote sensing data, and describe their spatial, temporal, spectral, and radiometric characteristics.
