The Penn West Master of Social Work (MSW) program is offered 100% asynchronous online. The mission of the Penn West MSW Program is to deliver an innovative, student-focused curriculum that embodies trauma informed principles, centers diversity and social justice, and models professionalism.  The MSW Program prepares students to respond professionally and creatively to the increasingly complex matrix of human needs and strengths in a changing society. The program also prepares students to work in direct and indirect practice and develops students’ leadership capacities. The MSW curriculum promotes an understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity and its importance to competent advanced generalist practice with a trauma informed lens.

Admission Requirements


  • Professional resume 
  • Official transcript verifying an earned baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education that includes a minimum of 21 semester hours of credit (or equivalent) distributed within a liberal arts curriculum in humanities, mathematics, physical and biological sciences, social and behavioral sciences, and fine arts.  
  • Official transcript demonstrating a minimum GPA of 3.0. Applicants with a GPA below 3.0 may be considered for acceptance to the Regular MSW program on the condition that they earn a GPA of at least 3.0 during their first semester of the MSW program.  
  • Two professional or educational references from individuals who can indicate readiness for graduate study and/or advanced social work practice. Applicants to the Advanced Standing Program are strongly encouraged to submit references from their undergraduate field educator, faculty, and/or supervisor.  (Electronic form will be sent to the names you provide. Do not request letters)
  • A personal statement that addresses the following in 3-4 double-spaced pages:
    • Why you have chosen to enter the social work profession. 
    • Your ability to value the perspectives of diverse populations. 
    • How your academic, professional, personal, and volunteer experiences have prepared you for graduate studies in social work. o 
    • Your motivation to apply to the MSW Program at PennWest.
