Conflict arises when people have different needs, wants, beliefs, or values, or when there is a lack of communication.  Given that conflict seldom resolves until it is addressed, societies develop agreed upon protocols to settle disputes. Of course, conflict resolution involves much more than following a set of steps. Students first acquire a foundational knowledge of the field. They analyze and evaluate the structures and functions of conflict.  From there, they consider the techniques and best practices of the various models of alternative dispute resolution. Real-world challenges are posed and analyzed in an engaging, asynchronous learning environment. Managed well, conflict and the conversations generated by it can ultimately produce innovative ideas that help people and society to grow.

  • Compare and contrast major theories of conflict management and resolution in a range of settings, such as families, workplaces, eldercare, and international politics.
  • Critique and defend the empirical effectiveness of a range of conflict resolution practices, such as nonviolent direct action or restorative justice.
  • Analyze various types of global political conflict in terms of prevention, resolution, and management.
  • Assess models for family mediation practice focusing on techniques and interventions for a range of family forms, stages in the family lifecycle, and social contexts.
