The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program prepares graduates for entry into practice as family nurse practitioners. Options include the MSN degree, PostMaster’s Certificate, and Second Master’s degree. The FNP-MSN degree is 49 semester hours in length and includes 518 hours of clinical practice. FNP graduates are prepared to provide primary care and are eligible to apply for legal certification as family nurse practitioners after passing professional certification exams through either the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Program (AANPCP). Courses are delivered online with the potential expectation of skills workshops on campus as available.

Student Learning Outcomes
- Synthesize established and evolving knowledge from nursing, the sciences, and humanities into advanced practice nursing.
- Incorporate professional/legal standards and moral/ethical values into a culturally sensitive practice.
- Provide advanced nursing practice that reflects critical thinking and effective interpersonal and communication skills.
- Appraise and assimilate theory and scientific evidence to investigate and evaluate practice based issues.
- Demonstrate awareness and responsiveness to systems-based practice through advocacy, collaboration, and effective use of resources.
Admission Requirements
- Transcript for BSN Degree from an ACEN- or CCNE-accredited program
- Additional Transcripts needed from ALL undergraduate and graduate institutions attended regardless of whether or not you earned a degree.
- GPA 3.0 minimum or higher
- RN License current and unencumbered in state where you will be completing practicum experiences.
- Resume describing your professional experience. Minimum One year of recent full-time clinical practice or two years of part-time clinical practice
- Goals/Essay 1-2-page personal statement describing understanding of FNP role and your personal career goals
- Two Recommendation from professional colleagues (registered nurses preferred)
Note: recommendations will be a form the recommender fills out via notification from the PennWest application system once the student submits their application.
Potential Pre/Co-Requisite Courses for MSN Students: Undergraduate or Graduate Statistics 3 credits if needed can be taken at PennWest online or Portage Online Learning or Community College etc..
